Exploring the Frontiers of Human Genomics: Progress and Promising Applications in Health

TimeAugust 1, 2023 14:00-16:00

Location1F Global Lounge, College of Public Health, NTU

We were honored to have hosted an enlightening series of talks by distinguished experts in genomic epidemiology. The event featured a lineup of four esteemed speakers, each bringing their unique perspectives and expertise to shed light on various aspects of genomics in modern healthcare and research.

We had the privilege of welcoming Dr. Pak Chung Sham, who holds the esteemed position of Chair Professor of Psychiatric Genomics at the LKS Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Sham's talk titled "Modelling the effects of genomic nurture on health and disease" delved into the intricate relationship between nature and nurture and their influences on health outcomes, offering novel insights into how we interpret genetic association findings in health.

Dr. Po-Hsiu Kuo from the Institute of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the College of Public Health, NTU, delivered an illuminating presentation of how data from various dimensions can be harnessed to better understand diverse psychiatric characteristics, highlighting the importance of deep phenotyping in mental health research.

Dr. Chen-Chi Wu, a physician-scientist from the College of Medicine at the NTU Hospital, then took the stage. Focusing on precision health in childhood hearing impairment, Dr. Wu's talk offered valuable perspectives on the utilization of genetics to advance the development of diagnostic, prognostic, and treatment strategies for this significant health issue among young patients.

Finally, Dr. Hsin-Chou Yang from the Institute of Statistical Science, Academia Sinica, underscored the transformative power of big data in shaping the landscape of precision medicine and smart health solutions. Dr. Yang's talk provided an overview of how data-driven strategies are driving innovation in healthcare.

This event brought together over 45 faculty and students to engage in a dynamic dialogue on the latest progress in genomic health and sparked collaborative ideas for future research endeavors within and beyond Taiwan.
